The Voelker Orth Museum is seeking a new Caretaker. The Museum is located in a 1890s Landmarked house in Flushing.  The Caretaker is responsible for the overall cleanliness, security, and proper functioning of the Museum premises. The position entails daily routines, weekly and seasonal property care.  This is an unsalaried position in exchange for personal use of an on-site furnished studio apartment, including gas and electric.  

Qualifications: The Museum is seeking an in individual with an understanding of basic building systems and house maintenance, available to handle the routine tasks. It seeks a self-directed individual, who has good communication skills, and is able to lift 40 lbs.  The Caretaker is required to live on premises.  The schedule requires regularly being on premises 12:45-4 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Overview of Job Tasks

  • Check grounds and buildings daily to maintain a safe & secure environment, using the installed alarm system;
  •  Available on premises during regular weekend public hours (Saturday & Sunday 1-4pm); 
  • Accept packages & mail and provide admittance to inspectors, service contractors, and staff & volunteers outside of regular office/museum  hours;
  • Clear and timely communication with appropriate staff about projects, supplies or conditions in need of attention.
  • Routine check of building systems;
  • Light grounds maintenance;
  • Snow & ice removal;
  • Maintenance, including occasional painting, and repair of the nature and magnitude that the average home owner undertakes him/herself;
  • Set-ups (seating, tables, other equipment) for public programs, staff & board meetings, and for the rental-use of the property;
  • Check and store equipment used before and after each event;
  • Maintain inventory of building-care supplies (in cooperation with housekeeper)
