Dressed for the Holidays and Nativities at Home
December 6 – January 11th
Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday 1-4pm
No Gallery hours December 25—January 5th

whimsyIn December, the Voelker Orth decorates the house, evoking the days when the Voelker and Orth families celebrated the season with friends. Come in from the cold and visit!

There is also an exhibition of folk nativities drawn from the collection of Dr. Anthony Amodia.  Nativity scenes, also known as crèches, are a Christmas tradition, predominantly in Catholic homes, as a pictorial celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. By the end of the 19th century nativity scenes were produced on a scale appropriate for home display, marking the holidays and inviting family discussion about beliefs and values. Crafted by artisans, mass-produced or home-made, their popularity has endured.  Artists and artisans around the world continue to create new artistic interpretations of this Christian religious event.

Dr. Anthony Amodia has generously provided a loan from his collection for this exhibition. His interest in collecting dates back to his childhood in Queens, when local Flushing department stores offered individual chalk-ware figures for purchase – priced at an amount within a child's allowance.  Dr. Amodia will offer a talk about his collecting and the Nativity Tradition at 2:00pm on Wednesday, December 10th, at 2:00pm

Ying Nung Ma's Touch of New York

January 24th – March 22nd
Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday 1-4pm

Artist's reception, Saturday, January 24th 2-4pm

Ying Nung (aka Susan) Ma's photographs can make you fall in love with NYC. Having emigrated from Taiwan, she sees the City with fresh eyes. Ms. Ma captures the excitement and energy of New York's iconic sites with her camera, and shows equal aplomb in documenting people and events. This is her first solo exhibition.

The January 24th reception includes a musical interlude, with a performance by Iris Ma, an accomplished flautist who is the artist's daughter. On faculty at several colleges in Taiwan, where she also has an active concert career, she joins us for a musical offering.

House tours are available on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. No tours or gallery hours the afternoons of November 26th, December 3rd, December 24th – January 4th.

As the Museum is located in a 1890s house with a number of small rooms, we ask that groups interested in taking a tour contact us in advance to better accommodate all visitors. The standard house tour runs 20-30 minutes.

The ground floor of the house is physically accessible. Children must be accompanied by adults.

Suggested donation $2.
